Sanpaotai is a slow-brewed tea experience, best enjoyed over multiple infusions. Traditionally served in a gaiwan (盖碗, lidded bowl), it combines tea leaves, dried fruits, rose paste, nuts, and rock sugar for a naturally sweet and nourishing drink.
How to Drink Sanpaotai
- Prepare Your Tea – Add tea leaves, rose paste, dried fruit, longan, nuts, and rock sugar to a gaiwan.
- Steep – Pour hot water (85-95°C / 185-205°F) and let it sit for 1-2 minutes.
- Sip & Refill – Gently tilt the lid to strain the tea as you sip, refilling with hot water as needed for multiple infusions.
- Eat the Ingredients – Enjoy the softened fruits and nuts as a warming, nourishing snack.
No Gaiwan? Try This Instead:
- Large Mug with a Lid – Cover while steeping and tilt to sip. Can be refilled 1-3 times.
- French Press – Steep, then press lightly to strain. Can be refilled 1-3 times.
- Teapot with a Strainer – Brew and pour as usual. Can be refilled 1-3 times.
- Bowl & Spoon – Steep in a bowl and sip while eating the softened ingredients. Can be refilled 1-3 times.
